Answer :
Since you're new to the islands you have a unique perspective. (Unless the assignment requires it) poetry does not necessarily have to follow a specific form -- it's more about your feelings and impressions.

What were the things you noticed -- little things that just _feel_ different from your previous home when you first arrived? What things make you feel welcomed and remind you of "home"? What are the things that you didn't expect and draw your attention while the people around you don't seem to notice them and take them for granted.

Start putting rough ideas down on paper -- a few words for each, thoughts, feelings, doesn't even have to be full sentences, just get the ideas out on paper. Then you can elaborate, turn it into complete thoughts, describe what these things are like, how do they feel to you. What do they mean to you.

Don't worry about whether it's "done" or not. It's poetry -- it will never be "finished". Turn in whatever you have -- whatever it is -- when the deadline arrives and you'll be pleasantly surprised with how well it will be received.

Answer :
I used to think Hawaii was all about_____ (fill in the blank here).
But now I realize it's more about_______.

I expected it to be ______.
But it turned out to be ______.

(or you can go with the five senses type thing.... the sights, sounds, feelings, smells, tastes)

Good luck
